Position Overview
The Cutoff Specialist plays a critical role in the aerospace casting process, responsible for the precise separation of cast parts from their gating and runner systems. This position supports foundry operations by ensuring that all cutoff processes meet strict aerospace quality, dimensional, and safety standards. The role demands high attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and adherence to process documentation to maintain product integrity and meet customer and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain cutoff saws, abrasive wheels, and other cutoff equipment used in separating aerospace castings from gating systems.
- Interpret blueprints, process sheets, and traveler documentation to determine cutoff locations and tolerances.
- Perform visual inspections of castings prior to and after cutoff to ensure integrity and conformity to specifications.
- Collaborate with foundry, finishing, and quality teams to optimize cutoff techniques and minimize scrap or rework.
- Use material handling equipment (cranes, hoists, forklifts) safely to transport molds and castings.
- Maintain accurate records of production, inspections, and equipment maintenance.
- Identify and communicate process improvements to increase efficiency and product quality.
- Follow all safety protocols and wear required PPE in accordance with foundry and aerospace industry standards.
- Support continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives within the foundry.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred.
- Experience:
- 1–3 years of foundry, metal casting, or aerospace manufacturing experience preferred.
- Experience with cutoff saws, abrasive cutting, or hot metal handling strongly preferred.
- Skills:
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of metalworking principles.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency with precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.).
- Commitment to quality, safety, and teamwork.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in a high-temperature industrial environment.
- Must be able to wear PPE including gloves, safety glasses, and face shields.
Work Environment
- Industrial foundry setting involving heat, noise, and metalworking operations.
- Requires strict adherence to safety procedures and aerospace process controls.
